International Relations

Since 1996, Odessa National Medical University is in continuous co-operation with European and International Association of universities, as an active member. In 2001, it was admitted as a member of International Scientific Committee of UNESCO.

Odessa National Medical University extensively uses latest scientific techniques and practices of best universities of the world in teaching process. This great contribution is due to close links with leading universities and academic centres: Washington University (USA), Polish Academy of Medicine (Poland), Milan University (Italy), Institute of Experimental Immunology (Switzerland), the International Fund of Hippocrates (Greece), A. Schweitzer International Medical Academy (Poland), Russian Heart Scientific-productive Complex (Russia), etc.

ONMedU’s participation in the joint programs and projects with Russia, Belgium, Netherlands, USA, Germany, Austria, South African Republic, etc. makes possible improvement and introduction into training and therapeutic processes of new educational and medical technologies, obtaining of grants, annual training of teachers in the best scientific and educational centers, direct deliveries of high technology medical equipments, joint release of scientific and scholarly literature, etc. Among the grants, carried out by the scientists of ONMedU together with the foreign associates : Practical-scientific grant (AIHA, USA), Training grant (UNICEF, the children’s fund of UN), Training grant (JHPIEGO, USA) and many others.

Our chief scientists are the honorable doctors of 42 international organizations and universities, who are “doctor honoris causa” of our university. They all deliver lectures to the students and teachers yearly. Among them are: Nobel Prize Winners — Prof. Rolph Zinkernagel (Switzerland) & Prof. Yevgeniy Chazov (Russia); Prof. Juliano Di Bernardo (Italy), Spiros Marketos (Greece) and Georgiy Kryzhanovskiy (Russia); President of Polish Academy of Medicine Prof. Casimir Imiyelinski; Rectors of several universities — Prof. Stefan Doel Trachtenberg (George Washington University, USA) & Ton That Bach (Hanoi National Medical University, Vietnam), and others.

Odessa is a beautiful city on the Black Sea coast that holds a special place in the hearts of Russians and Ukrainians. A visit to Odessa is sure to be unlike a visit to any other city. In contrast to other cities of the former Soviet Union, Odessa is rich in Western European culture. Odessa is known throughout the world for its art and culture and has, what is considered to be, the second most beautiful and important opera house in the world.

The population of Odessa is about 1.1 million. It is a cosmopolitan city with 150,000 tourists each year from all over the world. In the summer, they relax along the sandy shores of Odessa beaches and experience this eternally young city. The beaches allow tourists to feel like they are in the Mediterranean. All of the coast of Odessa is lined with popular beaches. In the summer they are filled with beautiful girls, music, and visitors sampling tasty food. One of the most popular beaches is Arcadia Beach, which is located about 10 minutes from downtown.

Walking in Odessa you can see its history from classical Italian influences to Soviet era apartment complexes. On Deribasovskaya Street — the central street — there is a variety of restaurants, theatres, concerts and a promenade of people. The port of Odessa has ships from all over the world arriving daily.

Odessa has 1185 streets, 62001 buildings, 24 hotels, 34 educational institutions, 88 health care centers, and 20 museums. Public transportation in Odessa city includes 21 tram routes, 15 trolley bus routes, 47 bus routes and 35 minibus routes. History of Odessa Odessa was founded in 1794 by Catherine the Great. In 1803, Tsar Alexander I appointed the 36 year old French emigrant, the Duke de Richelieu to be the mayor of Odessa. Eighteen months later, in 1805, the Tsar enlarged de Richelieu’s authority by appointing him to serve simultaneously as the governor of the three provinces of Ukraine. In the 11 years of his administration, the Duke de Richelieu acquired an extraordinary reputation as a statesmanship, both in Russia and abroad. His statue now points out to the sea, clothed inexplicable in a toga, presumably to indicate the source of Odessa’s wealth.

About university

Odessa National Maritime Academy was founded in 1944. At the Academy the studies are carried out according to the graded system. The terms of studies are the following: four years for bachelor, five and a half years for specialist and master. The system of ship’s crew training is in compliance with the requirements of the International Convention of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW -78/ 95) and other international conventions which give graduates the right to work on all types of vessels of native and foreign companies. Since 2014 the OMA serves as the official naval academy of the Ukrainian Navy.

The Odessa National Maritime Academy is well-known for a long time in the world of marine shipping owing to thousands of highly qualified specialists, its graduates, who work at hundreds of shipping companies all over the world and also thanks to its high rate among leading maritime institutions due to accreditation of specialists of the Academy by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and Nautical Institute (Great Britain), its membership in the International Association of Maritime Universities, active participation of scientists and teachers in the authoritative forums, which are being held by the U.N. International Maritime Organization, by the world leading maritime educational and scientific institutions.

We have academic experience and practical skills in EL (English Language) education of navigators. We are interested in elaborating integrated course of teaching navigation sciences through training technology of EL professional linguistic skills in distant learning mode.

Scientific research at the academy is conducted in: Navigation Safety — Marine Fleet Maintenance and Operations; Automation and Computer Integrated Technology in Marine Transport; Ship Repairing Technology & Technological Equipment; Social and Law Aspects of International Navigation; and Global Maritime Radio Communication.

For foreigners

Before admission foreign applicants should pass medical test in the Academy. Applicants, who are not able to pass medical test, or their health condition does not correspond to the requirements, are not admitted to participate in further procedures. Training procedure in the Academy is done according to the Contract with the foreign student, in the Russian language, according to curriculum for the chosen profession.

Important: international passport, document of education, medical test certificate and certificate of birth must be notary endorsed and translated into Ukrainian, in full accordance with legislation of the country of issue. They must be duly certified by the notary by Ukrainian consulate of correspondent country.

Odessa is traditionally multiethnic city. It hosts a number of nationalities, as a result Odessa is the most multinational city in Ukraine. The multinational character of the city has influenced the architecture of public buildings, reflecting the Mediterranean style of classical architecture and in the planning of buildings and facade compositions, Italian and French decor is ubiquitous.

In 2009, the historical center of the port city of Odessa was officially listed in the preliminary World Heritagelist of UNESCO.

Odessa’s most iconic symbol, the Potemkin Stairs, is rightfully acknowledged as one of the most beautiful staircases in Europe. In July 2015 special ceremony has inaugurated “Treasure of European Film Culture” emblem next to the Potemkin Stairs. European Film Academy awarded the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa the title “Treasure of European Film Culture” as one of the world’s most famous historical film locations.

The buildings are attractive and nearly all the streets and squares are lined with green trees. The city really does enjoy a great location beside the sea. There are a large number of restaurants and cafés to try out, many of which are outdoors. The food on offer is tasty and fresh and if you like then you can enjoy a good glass of Ukrainian wine or a tasty Ukrainian pastry.

About university

NTU “KhPI” is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine that prepares professionals in more than 100 specialties.

International Education Department in NTU “KPI” allows foreign students to learn Russian, prepare them for entering at NTU “KhPI” or studying in any university in Ukraine.

Admission of international students is carried out all year round. The duration of study is 10 months, during which students learn Russian language and get basic knowledge of natural sciences.
